Many people in the 1950’s era, spent their time reading newspapers, playing board games, listening to the radio broadcasts, and children played outside.
They had a lot more socialization back then too, people were
always hanging out at each others houses, outside such as fast food places, or
even went bowling to catch up with their friends a lot.
From my research I have noticed that they had limited fast
food options than they do now.
They had McDonald’s, or takeaway from the local fish shop.
Many families who had spare money went to cinema trips and
holidays.
Some who did not have any spare money spent their family
time at home. I did notice that for housewives housework is much harder back
then it is now.
Good examples are people did their laundry by hand instead
of a washing machine and hung up their clothes on a clothing line instead of
dryer drying their wet clothes.
Refrigerators were considered a luxury in the 50’s so many people
who did not have them had to go out and buy their groceries daily.
It was rare that married women went to work, and they took
on the childcare and housework, while their husbands went to work.
Another thing that was common was young children left school
much earlier than we do today, they start working at 14 years old.
This caused fewer people the chance to further their
education and in society there wasn’t much pressure to go to college and get a
degree.
The average salary during this era was 3,300 or $200 higher
than this according to Roy V. Peel. He was the director of Bureau of the Census,
Department of Commerce.
What helped the economy during the 1950’s was the increase
of consumer spending.
When consumer goods became available in the post-wear time
period, people wanted to spend.
The 50’s was called the happy days because they just
finished a war and the economy was booming.
Along with the rise of the baby boom as well. During this
era, many public and social booms happened.
