50s Blue Coffee Cup

This is a gorgeous coffee or teacup for fifters! The light blue cup has flowers that droop down and has long stems. It has long dark green leaves and other different flowers that have a fluffy white top. The overall cup is tall and looks like it can hold lots of coffee in it. There is a white handle that is so cute with a bit of gold at the top of it. My grandma used to have a small teacup just like this one and I remember she used to tell me stories about how she met my grandpa while holding it. They met while my grandpa flew in from the military and settled within Arizona.

Two Popular Female And Male Baby Names From The 1950s

Coming at number one that is the most popular name for a boy in the 1950's is the name James. For a girl the number one name of this decade was Mary.  It is no surprise that Mary is the number one name that was most used for babies during the 50s and I am sure everyone had to add their last name for signing up for anything. The name James is not what I expected as a list of names that people came up with to name their children in this time period.  I honestly thought it would have been John or Charles since you have seen so many movies with these type of character names that represent earlier decades.  What surprised me the most was that some women named their baby girls Cynthia. This is not a name I would have thought blended in the 1950's era.  Another one to add to this list is a boy name Michael although watching some shows that were within the 1920's decade, I should have caught on to this sooner.  I know one thing for sure is that names can be shocking to ...

1950s Common Alcohol Glasses

Many people drank lots of alcohol during the 50’s era. Mostly men though as woman would have been criticized if they drank too much. As they had to be sober and fully aware to take care of the children. One glass that is popular is the 1949 vintage whiskey glass. It is a small, but it can contain lots of alcohol. Many people like this whiskey glass because it can obtain lots of ice. Another widely talked about glass is the 1950 vintage wine cup.  This glass is popular because this caters to women who love wine. It can hold a good amount of white wine and red wine. Many people use this glass during parties and other gatherings. The scotch glasses are the most popular out of everyone of these cups mentioned. This is because lot of men used scotch glasses in the 1950’s. Especially for those who went to the local bars. Lastly, the beer pint glass is the next favorite for people who like to collect 1950’s cups or alcohol in general. This beer glass is clear and looks styli...

Fifties Style Fashion For Men

As it is known many men lived within the era of the second world war and were trying to cope with their PSTD from it.  This although did not stop their good fashion sense. I am pretty sure they used clothing as a way to distract themselves. Lots of the men had clean-cut and conservative outfits that was suited for them to looking like businessmen.  It seemed as if they wanted the world and other neighbors to see that they are smart and provided well for their families.  Many of their style of clothing icons were Elvis Presley, James Dean, Marlon Brando. These celebrities had the aesthetic of being playful and living life to the fullest. People from the 50's went with the preppy style of clothes that played off a youthful culture that was inspired by students in college. During this era, many men wore oversized shirts to give the look that they were fuller and healthy. These were mostly worn during the day.  Another popular clothing item was the double-breasted suits....

This dance is usually with the music genre the blues.  Along with the Boogie Woogie music with fast tempos. The dance includes jumping, hopping, stomping, and much more. 2) The Bop The Bop dance is mixed with a jazz genre and is like the Jitterbug in a sense. This style of dance was mentioned more for teenagers and young adults.  The Bop definition came from the jazzy tunes from the 1940's. This dance move used many moves as he swing and was usually done with almost no touching too. 3) The Bunny Hop This dance move became a big hit during the 1950's. It was danced to by Ray Anthony, which came out in 1952 and this included a step by step guide on how to do this dance move.  To do this dance style all you need is the energy to do it and to make sure you do not break any bones. This dance move is pretty simple. 4) The Chalypso This type of dance w...

What Serial Killers Did Back in their Primes

This is an awesome red and blue gift for fifters! This hardcover American serial killer book is thick in pages and looks eye-catching. The wording epidemic reminds me of the pandemic that we are currently in right now. The book has a newspaper pattern on the front and the sentences are in big bold letters. This is a book that contains killers from the 1950’s through the 2000’s. My cousin has a book similar and this reminds me of her because she loves to read all about what serial killers did back in their primes. Which seems scary but she seems sane.

Medical Health Was Horrible For People In The 1950s

It is no surprise that the 1950's did so bad with health in general. This is definitely their downfall in this era. The ways or actions they did to try and cure their patients seems so much like torture.  Some good examples are how they used to leave their patients in a solid big metal bathtub and physically lock them in, shocked them, did blind brain surgery, and more.  I read some articles saying they whipped these patients and were not taken care of in good conditions either.  In the 50's, it seemed that physical health was of toddler age but on the other hand they had to have experience to see what helps and does not help patients.  During the war era, many doctors or nurses had to cut off their patients legs and arms because they did not know who to stich them back up or get an infection out.  One thing about knowing all this information is that I feel so sorry for everyone in this era who had a serious physical or mental illness.  Some patients were t...

The Story of Hilliard Brooks Jr's Murder

In 1950 on August 13, a 22-year old man named Hilliard Brooks Jr. was murdered on a bus after he was accused of making a disturbance.  Back in these days what was the disturbance, was he talking back because he had to stick up for himself or was it because he was protecting someone else?  Some reports were very unjust and plain unfair in my opinion.  The reason he was accused of this was because be refused to leave and enter from the rear bus as Jim Crow wanted him to.  This bus driver called the police and a white officer shot this black man and wounded two people in the process.  All because Jim Crow and the bus driver were trying to be big bosses and choose violence when they woke up that day.  Brooks left behind a pregnant wife and several young children. Even though many eye witnesses reported that the shooting was unnecessary, the officer faced no charges.  After this many people were outraged over how this all went down and set the stage for the...

Women Were Shamed More For Divorce Than Men in The 50's

During the 1950's women got married way early in life and went into wife life the rest of their lifespans.  At least most of the women did and even though it was frowned upon some couples got divorced. Many people who did separate were considered a disgrace but mostly went after women for not maintaining the relationship than the men. If a man got married again, they supported them but for women it was not always the case. The statistics from back in the 50's of couples who got divorces were in the medium percentage of everyone in the United States.  It is said, that women felt immense pressure to focus their goals on getting married and having a nice wedding ring.  These aspirations did not focus on whether the husband would be a good and unchanged man in the future or if he would leave you for another woman.  This was all about the fairytale of having love and looking so happy and successful on the outside. In the 1950's, the marriages in the U.S. were rated so hig...

What Made Them Know They Loved Each Other

This video starts off with a woman brushing her hair in her vanity mirror and seems to be thinking about life.  They included nice and calming music which I do love. Both the boy and girl looked presentable but I do see a pattern that everyone in this era looked a lot like each other.  I like how they used teenagers to represent how it is okay to not know if you have fallen in love just yet.   When the boy said, "You are the only girl I dated in two months." It made me laugh because of how brutal it sounded at the moment.  It made me realize everyone experiences the feeling of being lost in your emotions and not knowing if you are sad, happy, in love, or mad.  What makes me feel fuzzy inside is how the daughter is comfortable in asking her mother about what love feels like.  How love is an amazing feeling but it can also bring bad emotions as well such as when you get your heartbroken.  Everyone experiences heartbreak at one point or another but i...

Red and Black Word Search Book

This is a fun and easy word search puzzle book for those who love the 1950’s! The book has a woman staring shockingly at the camera and she is holding onto a red old television. Inside the TV has a text print that gives the illusion it is inside. This cover has big letters that says, “The official 1950’s entertainment word search puzzle book.” I noticed there is a smaller text box at the bottom in a red color. My grandmother has a collection of word searches books from this era. She loves to sit in front of the television and do her word search puzzle every day for an hour.

The Procedure To Get An Abortion In The 1950's

Many women during the 50's had to get their abortions on the downlow. This means that they could not do their abortions in clinics like people do today. Lot of the women tell news articles today about how and where these abortions took place and many of them said in high-rise buildings.  They would rush into the apartment building and be so nervous because they had no idea what could happen.  The procedure could go wrong or they would get caught because somebody snitched. Many of the women said as soon as they walked in the assistant would ask for the money and at the time it price was $250 for one abortion procedure.  Male doctors would do their surgery and it was mostly those who did not have American licensing just yet.  He would come in and ask you questions such as, "Are you sure you're pregnant? When was your last period? Have you had any miscarriages?" You would then go to the bathroom, empty your bladder, and take off your underwear. You were then placed on a...

Husbands were Spoiled in the Mornings

This woman who produces this 1950's morning routine video did a great job of capturing this era's vibe.  She even made the effort to put the month, day, and year of the day she was recreating. It starts off with her sleeping in bed and acting like she is waking up.  In her view you can see her vanity mirror on her dresser and beautiful antique knickknacks. She even had her hair in what looks to be a cap.  I have seen many of these morning routines before and people in the 1950's always made their beds and took pride in their houses being spotless.  Continuing on, this women in the video does the opposite and pulls back the blanket to, "air out." This took me by surprise.  What I love though is that she is wearing a fancy adorable nightgown. Then she puts on a bed jacket and states these were very common in the 50's.  It looks to be about a lacy see through cover up and is transparent, it is hard to describe.  People in the 1950's always opened up their...

Men's Fashion was so Boring

Men's fashion only consisted of suits and sometimes loungewear. In my opinion it was nothing special.  I saw some photos of men who wore button up shirts and long shorts right above the knee. You would assume that they would be wearing it to only the beach but that wasn't the case. They wore them out of the house as well.  Many of them wore long pants and long sleeve shirts in the wintertime and almost all the time depending on the guy.  Compared to men today back in the 1950's men wore loose pants that did not squeeze the ankle as many of them do today.  Which is fine for me, I think men look great in both types of style pants and can wear them as they please.  There were some men who went for the typical bad boy look such having a leather jacket, blue jeans, and had their hair nicely slicked back.  This is the style of what James Dean always wore. Other men were all about suits and looking professional.  They had fancy hats, white button ups, black c...

The Ugly Topics in the 1950's

Coming up on number one is Nylon stockings with the seams up the back and the girdle or garter belt that one needed to wear hose.  Movies and television shows were in black and white. No options for color back in the 50's until the later years.  White gloves were often required and no trousers were to be seen in public. If you were naked out in the streets you would be disowned.  Popular hairstyles of this era were a ponytail or one like the actress Lucille Ball.  Lots of women wore their hair up and this gave them the appearance to look older.  Girls and ladies wore aprons for many of the household chores and it looked unfashionable. Schools were segregated in the 1950's and it was very common that children did not finish highschool.  Kids back in this era had stricter rules and grew up way quicker than many children today.  People had to wear modest clothing and always look presentable.  Racism was a thing back in the 50's and you did not see mu...
