Vintage Cat Clock From The 50s

This cat clock is a nostalgic but cool gift for those who love the 50’s! The item has a longhand and shorthand that blends in well with the background color. The overall colors for this clock are white and black. This cat has a white outstanding bow and has a smile on it’s face. The eyes move and so does the tail that sways back and forth. My grandfather used to have a clock like this, and it used to freak me out as a kid. It brings back lots of good memories from my childhood. I loved it but hated it at the same time.

Women's Strict Beauty Routines in The 1950's

What Is So Special About This Film? What is so special about it is the aesthetic this woman put into this video. She has such a cheery and fun voice that lights up the room. This woman has the dressing style down for this 1950's style video about beauty routines and how she does not talk bad about it either.  Some people in their videos they have some terrible things to say about the 50's while they are making a video about this time period. She thinks of doing this routine during the week to give yourself some self-care and be gentle with your skin and body.  The 50's themed music in this film makes it even more calming and has a relaxing vibe to it. She reminds me of my grandma who was born in the 1950's era and brings back some good memories. I definitely would recommend watching this video as she has some great tips and tricks to put in your modern or 50's beauty routine that you have. It works for both! What Happens In This 50's Video?    A woman commentat...

Gender Roles in the 1950s And Why They Are Wrong

Women's Roles During this time women's roles were quite strict and they had to do all the cleaning, cooking, raising the children.  On top of these they were pushed to be healthy and workout to stay fit for their husbands.  The men on the other hand were supposed to support the family based only on their one income and back in this era wages were for keeping people off the streets.  The 1950's were all about the family life and living to be peaceful after the war ended.  Women were taught to socialize as well but by hanging out with their girl friends and talk to people when going to the grocery store.  Many of the women did not have any social anxiety or felt isolated because they made time to hang out with others and made sure to be out and about even if it were to get coffee.  Lots of them did not rely on TV's to keep their time occupied and kept themselves busy by doing chores, socializing, doing fun activities, taking vacations with their familie...

50s Pink Vintage Cup

This is a beautiful cup for Fifters! The vintage cup has pink glitter in the background and has a silver top. This drink holder is small and has a silver shiny side at the very top. This drink holder has a white almost cursive print and fits nicely in anyone’s hands. There is two hearts on the front and a crown as well. My friend has this exact same vintage cup and she loves it. She uses it everyday for her hot coffee and brings it along with her to work.

Famous 1950s Movies That Were A Hit At The Time

How A Psychiatrist Interviewed A Depressed Patient

What I love about this Psychiatric interview is that the medical professional does not judge this woman at all but has patience and talks to her kindly.  It seems as if he knows she's having a rough time and only wants to help her as she seems lost and uninterested in anything in life but the mention of death. To others she may seem as if she is a normal person without a chemical imbalance in her brain making her struggle internally but do not dismiss her as if she is faking or just wants attention.  I know many people from this 1950's era would disagree with this statement but mental illnesses should be taken more seriously and should have a fragile approach.  At the next part of the scene they show this woman's wrists that are covered in bandages but the interviewer does not ask about them right away only later in the film.   He goes onto ask questions about her personal life, what she does in the day, how she feels, and if she eats enough. When explaining how...

Top 5 Stories Set in the 50s You Cannot Put Down

Some books about the 1950's are not that well written in my opinion as they leave some good details out from this era or do not have good enough information.  Others though are so detailed and are so interesting that you cannot put down not matter if it is already 1:00am. 1) Wishing you were here by Catherine Chant.   This novel is about how a woman who makes a wish that ends her in the 1950's. Where she tries to save a teenager from dying but gets caught up in knowing him. Which she eventually falls in love with him.  2) A 1950s Housewife by Sheila Hardy.   This book is all about the strict rules and expectations housewives had to do and abide by. How married life was like during the post-war period. What did women and men do to spice up their marriages as well.  3) Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.   Many people usually read this book in school but not for all. This book is about how a young man goes through adulthood while staying in NYC. We as reader...

50s Merch Rock N Roll T-Shirt

This is an awesome rock and roll gift for those who love the 1950’s! The T-shirt comes in many sizes that can fit children and adults of any genders. This clothing item comes in a black color and has red mixed within it as well. It says, “Rock’ n’ Roll 1958 Classic.” This shirt has a big 50’s microphone and a CD player on the outside of it. My grandpa has one of these shirts hanging in his closet and he loves to wear it all the time. He always says, “Rock N Roll music was my favorite growing up and it still is.”

Two Popular Female And Male Baby Names From The 1950s

Coming at number one that is the most popular name for a boy in the 1950's is the name James. For a girl the number one name of this decade was Mary.  It is no surprise that Mary is the number one name that was most used for babies during the 50s and I am sure everyone had to add their last name for signing up for anything. The name James is not what I expected as a list of names that people came up with to name their children in this time period.  I honestly thought it would have been John or Charles since you have seen so many movies with these type of character names that represent earlier decades.  What surprised me the most was that some women named their baby girls Cynthia. This is not a name I would have thought blended in the 1950's era.  Another one to add to this list is a boy name Michael although watching some shows that were within the 1920's decade, I should have caught on to this sooner.  I know one thing for sure is that names can be shocking to ...

Etiquette Rules That Are Incredibly Unfair For Children

These rules paint the picture that during the 1950's children have no rights and should not be taken seriously at all.  The first etiquette rule is that children should been seen but never heard. Kids in the 50's knew to wait until they were spoken to respond.  Otherwise they were expected to sit and listen but to never interrupt at all.  Next, is that children should never wear sweatpants to the dinner table.  I think this is an unfair rule as what if kids want to get ready for bedtime to occupy their time and then eat their dinners.  How children have to shake adults hands not matter who they are when they walk into the room.  Some kids could feel uncomfortable shaking a hand of a person they heard conversations about or how they seem to be creepy for their liking.  Lastly, the notion that children should write thank you notes for the gifts they receive. This I think is just unnecessary as a child could just say thank you right then and there and be ...

Bad Boys in the 1950s

These type of men/teens were the most idolized people in the 1950's along with some celebrities.  One celebrity in particular that had the bad boy style and his name was James Dean.  This type of outfit melted the girls/women's hearts at the time. Males would wear a leather or denim jackets, white or patter button up top underneath, blue or light jeans, either a quiff hair or leave it natural with some gel in it.  I think of the outfits that Johnny Depp would wear in his Crybaby movie with his slicked back hair, leather jacket, and a rebellious but hot vibe.  Today we label these type of people as bad boys but back in the 1950's they were called the greasers and apart of the greaser subculture.  Looking back at these photos you never saw older men wearing this style, it was mostly teenagers and young adults.  Those who dressed this way were definitely very popular in high school. Let's also not forget they added a cigarettes to compliment the look. If any o...

Red Valentine's Day Face Mask 50s

This is a beautiful heart mask gift for those who love the 1950s! The mask is small and has four different colors on it. There is the black straps, yellow hearts, white orbs, and some grey orbs as well. This face wear has two straps that hang on the ears and are adjustable. It has a wire within the top part and would fit nicely to any face. My mom has a mask similar and she wears it constantly. She loves to collect pretty and uniquely designed masks.

A Doctor's Perspective On Illnesses From The 1950s

Illnesses from the 50's were not as bad as the Spanish flu, which I assume was in the early 1900's. The common illnesses for people back in the 1950's were scarlet fever, diphtheria, typhoid fever, yellow fever, rheumatic fever, pellagra, influenza, smallpox, and cholera.  For some people it was not surprising or was even expected that children died from measles or from a whooping cough. A doctor from Chicago states that these illnesses from the 50s were feared as much as the public feared AIDS back in the 80's or 90's. When someone catches the scarlet fever they do not feel good at all, they become pale, have a red rash, and a pallor around the mouth. After this they just die.  As you know many people in this time period were cautious about illnesses like the pandemic today.  Although there were still many people who did not take diseases seriously nor believed in them since they have not gotten them yet. Others were forgetful about these illnesses or were not care...

Top 5 Dances From the 1950s

1) The Boogie Woogie This type of dance style is like swing dancing that is fast and this was also labeled as, "Jump Swing." This dance is usually with the music genre the blues.  Along with the Boogie Woogie music with fast tempos. The dance includes jumping, hopping, stomping, and much more. 2) The Bop The Bop dance is mixed with a jazz genre and is like the Jitterbug in a sense. This style of dance was mentioned more for teenagers and young adults.  The Bop definition came from the jazzy tunes from the 1940's. This dance move used many moves as he swing and was usually done with almost no touching too. 3) The Bunny Hop This dance move became a big hit during the 1950's. It was danced to by Ray Anthony, which came out in 1952 and this included a step by step guide on how to do this dance move.  To do this dance style all you need is the energy to do it and to make sure you do not break any bones. This dance move is pretty simple. 4) The Chalypso This type of dance w...

Why Old Century Lamps are so Interesting

Desk lamp for those who love the 1950’s! This light is dim but not too bright for the publics eyes. It has a rustic and vintage look that catches your eyes. The bottom is made out of what looks to be wood and has a shaded glass over it. This bulb is gold in color and has a tear drop shape. My friend has this lamp and he loves to use it when he is reading his Harry Potter books. Seeing any lights that looks like this reminds me of him.

Medical Health Was Horrible For People In The 1950s

It is no surprise that the 1950's did so bad with health in general. This is definitely their downfall in this era. The ways or actions they did to try and cure their patients seems so much like torture.  Some good examples are how they used to leave their patients in a solid big metal bathtub and physically lock them in, shocked them, did blind brain surgery, and more.  I read some articles saying they whipped these patients and were not taken care of in good conditions either.  In the 50's, it seemed that physical health was of toddler age but on the other hand they had to have experience to see what helps and does not help patients.  During the war era, many doctors or nurses had to cut off their patients legs and arms because they did not know who to stich them back up or get an infection out.  One thing about knowing all this information is that I feel so sorry for everyone in this era who had a serious physical or mental illness.  Some patients were t...

Educational Videos From This Era Should Come Back

In the 1950's they had a lot of educational videos and these were all about how a person should act and what you should attain from these.  These films were mostly for middle class people and the purpose was to teach kids the proper way to behave.  Unlike educational videos today they have a step by step guide on how to make a sandwich, have family time, what love is like and what feelings you go through trying to figure out if you are in love, and more.  In 2021, we have educational videos that are related to how fast food is made, the cold war, Hitler, Ted Talks, and more.  Our educational videos are not like the 50's ones where they have a guide that actually relates to everyday life hacks.  These videos are about telling children and adults who have not had talks or guidance about regular everyday things that were not taught to them as they were young.  I think the type of educational videos from the 1950's should come back and would be beneficial for e...

The Golden Age From World War II

The 1950's was called the golden age of Capitalism as it was a period of unprecedented economic growth that benefited both the capitalists and workers, which resulted in bigger wages. This era was right after World War II and everyone was getting back on their feet financially and emotionally as well.  I am not too sure about mentally especially for men as they must of had some PTSD from the whole ordeal.  This opened up doors for people to find jobs and create some businesses with ease. People in this time period started watching television and listening to music all the time. Music artists, actresses, and actors were making lots of money during this time since people were into both of these.  This was also the time for the baby boom. If you do not know what this is it is about how lots of babies were born as many troops returned home from the war and started families with their spouses.  Do not be mistaken though women were the wives and lots of them stayed that wa...

The First Black Child In An All White School

Ruby Bridges was the first ever black child to go to an all white public elementary school in Louisiana.  An the fact that she turned 66 years old this year is shocking because it means this was not a long time ago. This was pretty recent.  Ms. Ruby Bridges was born on September 8th, 1954, she was the oldest of five children from Lucille and Abon Bridges, farmer in Tylertown, Mississippi.  She moved to Louisiana when she was two years old because of her fathers work opportunities.  When she was six years old, she advanced in the civil rights in 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary in the south.  Ruby and her mother were escorted by four federal marshals to the school everyday because of safety reasons and people were very racists back then.  She walked past crowds screaming evil slurs at her and this did not scare her until she later saw a woman holding a black baby doll in a coffin.  Ruby had to spend her ...

Mothers In The 1950s Left Their Babies Alone Outside

One thing I was not expecting was how strollers in the 1950's were actually called prams.  Based off of looking at these prams they are so cool and fashionable.  No wonder new mothers did not mind strolling with their babies in these.  Unlike these strollers today that are chunky and have a lot of storage, the 50's prams look breakable and unsteady in some photos.  These prams were the most bought item for those who had babies and who could blame them.  If I was gifted one of these, I would love it.  What surprised me the most was to find out how mothers in the 1950's left their babies in these strollers alone while they did their house chores inside.  It was recommended for parents to give their offspring daily doses of fresh air everyday and these prams gave their babies enough room to stretch out and enjoy the sun. While it is noticeable many parents did not have to worry as much leaving their children out to play as lots of people were always outsi...
