50s Coca Cola Salt and Pepper Shakers

These are a cool sat and pepper shaker for those who love the 1950’s! The bottles are small and are made out of glass. They both have a silver top that is shiny and reflects the lights nicely. You can see the name brand called, “Coca Cola” on the front and they can hold lots of both these spices. They resemble the older soda shapes and look well put together. My cousin has these salt and pepper shakers that are similar to these two and she uses them a lot. She got these from her friend, and it turns out her friend bought the same ones too!

1950 Original Cinderella Disney Movie

Brief Summary   Cinderella is a Disney movie is all about a young woman who lives with her evil stepmother and step sisters. They basically make her their slave and the mom and sisters get to be lazy and live their best lives.  The family gets too mooch off of Cinderella's fathers money. One night she meets a fairy godmother and she provides her a beautiful ballgown and glass heels.  Cinderella dances with this prince and they fall in love with each other at first sight. She then leaves and the prince is devastated so then he searches her and eventually he does and they live happily ever after.  What To Like About Cinderella   This movie does help the main character to be disciplined and to not be about boys but to focus on housework and her future. Although she did not get along with her family she still was kind and did not say anything bad about them.  Cinderella goes to the ball to have a fun time and did not have the goal to meet the prince. She ...

Why 50s Deserts Should Be on Modern Day Walls

These are beautiful posters gift for those who love the 1950’s! The picture boards have four different deserts that are for sale. There is strawberry, root beer float, hot fudge, and vanilla shake. All of them have whipped cream and are of affordable prices. They all seem to have a rough but straight to the point font and all of them look super yummy. My friend has a poster similar to these, but she only has two. She got them from her mother in law as a birthday gift and she always love when she gets gifts from her.

Two Popular Female And Male Baby Names From The 1950s

Coming at number one that is the most popular name for a boy in the 1950's is the name James. For a girl the number one name of this decade was Mary.  It is no surprise that Mary is the number one name that was most used for babies during the 50s and I am sure everyone had to add their last name for signing up for anything. The name James is not what I expected as a list of names that people came up with to name their children in this time period.  I honestly thought it would have been John or Charles since you have seen so many movies with these type of character names that represent earlier decades.  What surprised me the most was that some women named their baby girls Cynthia. This is not a name I would have thought blended in the 1950's era.  Another one to add to this list is a boy name Michael although watching some shows that were within the 1920's decade, I should have caught on to this sooner.  I know one thing for sure is that names can be shocking to ...

Etiquette Rules That Are Incredibly Unfair For Children

These rules paint the picture that during the 1950's children have no rights and should not be taken seriously at all.  The first etiquette rule is that children should been seen but never heard. Kids in the 50's knew to wait until they were spoken to respond.  Otherwise they were expected to sit and listen but to never interrupt at all.  Next, is that children should never wear sweatpants to the dinner table.  I think this is an unfair rule as what if kids want to get ready for bedtime to occupy their time and then eat their dinners.  How children have to shake adults hands not matter who they are when they walk into the room.  Some kids could feel uncomfortable shaking a hand of a person they heard conversations about or how they seem to be creepy for their liking.  Lastly, the notion that children should write thank you notes for the gifts they receive. This I think is just unnecessary as a child could just say thank you right then and there and be ...

Why Old Century Lamps are so Interesting

Desk lamp for those who love the 1950’s! This light is dim but not too bright for the publics eyes. It has a rustic and vintage look that catches your eyes. The bottom is made out of what looks to be wood and has a shaded glass over it. This bulb is gold in color and has a tear drop shape. My friend has this lamp and he loves to use it when he is reading his Harry Potter books. Seeing any lights that looks like this reminds me of him.

Cocaine Was Sold Freely In Coca Colas

Cocaine is a stimulant drug that is made from leave of the South American coca plant.  Many people during the 1950's people did not use cocaine that much because it was outlawed around the era of 1914.  During this time it was said that African Americans were the ones who were the dangerous criminals since they used this drug the most.  The reason cocaine became illegal was because the community feared that southern women were in mortal danger of being attacked by cocaine African American men.  It was the Harrison Act that became the law and one of the first pieces of American legislation on the issue of drug regulation.  What shocked me to find out was the use of cocaine in soda and opium products. Many people in this era just took them without a second thought.  They did not know the harsh effects it has on the body now and how it makes you look older and unhealthy. Although Cocaine was banned many people were still using it and secretly snorting it all t...

5 Major Trends From The 50s

 1) Soda Fountains If someone wanted a cold drink or an ice cream back in the 1950's, then you would find the soda fountain. These were popular among the teenagers when they had parties.  When having a soda fountain you would be labeled as a cool person back in this era. I bet these sodas tasted amazing. 2) The Conical Bra This bra was the hugest trend for women back in the 50s and it definitely brought a lot of attention from the public. This was also known as the bullet bra or the torpedo.  The bullet is described as the bra that has the cone shape and was considered a sexy piece of item in this era.  3) Sideburns Elvis Presley and James Dean were celebrities that had the best sideburns in history. These sideburns were about one and a half inches below the ears.  This combined with the sleek look with the leather jackets were the hottest thing in the world in this time period.  4) Hula Hoops  These hula hoops were a big hit in the 50s as many women i...

What Were Families Like In The 50s Era?

Family life in the 1950's seemed so simple and they all appeared happy during this era or at least were portrayed like this in films. I know not all families were happy and had healthy relationships with each other but the media did try to influence public that this is the right way to act and aspire to be. The video starts off with showing a house, the father was waving his son to stop what he is doing and to stand by him. Along with the mother and daughter coming outside.  This family prioritizes their quality time together and makes sure to schedule it in advance.  Before this family was a mess and all the responsibilities were on the mother only. Which was unfair.  It was stated that the mom did all the laundry, cleaned her daughters room, did the dishes, ironed her sons pants, and did not have any time left to go to the movies with her husband.  Instead the mother set a family meeting in their dining room and suggested that everyone have their own roles in the h...

The First Black Child In An All White School

Ruby Bridges was the first ever black child to go to an all white public elementary school in Louisiana.  An the fact that she turned 66 years old this year is shocking because it means this was not a long time ago. This was pretty recent.  Ms. Ruby Bridges was born on September 8th, 1954, she was the oldest of five children from Lucille and Abon Bridges, farmer in Tylertown, Mississippi.  She moved to Louisiana when she was two years old because of her fathers work opportunities.  When she was six years old, she advanced in the civil rights in 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary in the south.  Ruby and her mother were escorted by four federal marshals to the school everyday because of safety reasons and people were very racists back then.  She walked past crowds screaming evil slurs at her and this did not scare her until she later saw a woman holding a black baby doll in a coffin.  Ruby had to spend her ...

Mothers In The 1950s Left Their Babies Alone Outside

One thing I was not expecting was how strollers in the 1950's were actually called prams.  Based off of looking at these prams they are so cool and fashionable.  No wonder new mothers did not mind strolling with their babies in these.  Unlike these strollers today that are chunky and have a lot of storage, the 50's prams look breakable and unsteady in some photos.  These prams were the most bought item for those who had babies and who could blame them.  If I was gifted one of these, I would love it.  What surprised me the most was to find out how mothers in the 1950's left their babies in these strollers alone while they did their house chores inside.  It was recommended for parents to give their offspring daily doses of fresh air everyday and these prams gave their babies enough room to stretch out and enjoy the sun. While it is noticeable many parents did not have to worry as much leaving their children out to play as lots of people were always outsi...

The Story of Hilliard Brooks Jr's Murder

In 1950 on August 13, a 22-year old man named Hilliard Brooks Jr. was murdered on a bus after he was accused of making a disturbance.  Back in these days what was the disturbance, was he talking back because he had to stick up for himself or was it because he was protecting someone else?  Some reports were very unjust and plain unfair in my opinion.  The reason he was accused of this was because be refused to leave and enter from the rear bus as Jim Crow wanted him to.  This bus driver called the police and a white officer shot this black man and wounded two people in the process.  All because Jim Crow and the bus driver were trying to be big bosses and choose violence when they woke up that day.  Brooks left behind a pregnant wife and several young children. Even though many eye witnesses reported that the shooting was unnecessary, the officer faced no charges.  After this many people were outraged over how this all went down and set the stage for the...

Homemade Baby Formula's

Many mothers during the 1950's made their own formula recipes and if they were not using formula these babies were breastfed.  There was even reports on how many women used juice to feed their newborn babies at the time and this was not a good idea.  At the time parents thought it was good to do that and what is shocking to learn about was how dads were not allowed to attend their children's birth.  How fathers were also not allowed to be around when women were nursing, which is a silly concept.  During the 50's doctors recommended that parents keep their babies on a strict schedule.  This is good advice that many people give out to new mother's and fathers.  Babies often drank evaporated milk mixed with water and corn syrup instead of formula along with tea, vitamins at 10 days, and diluted orange juice at three weeks.  Back in the 1950's, babies who were fed formula often got juice because of its Vitamin C, which prevented scurvy.  Many of these...

The Procedure To Get An Abortion In The 1950's

Many women during the 50's had to get their abortions on the downlow. This means that they could not do their abortions in clinics like people do today. Lot of the women tell news articles today about how and where these abortions took place and many of them said in high-rise buildings.  They would rush into the apartment building and be so nervous because they had no idea what could happen.  The procedure could go wrong or they would get caught because somebody snitched. Many of the women said as soon as they walked in the assistant would ask for the money and at the time it price was $250 for one abortion procedure.  Male doctors would do their surgery and it was mostly those who did not have American licensing just yet.  He would come in and ask you questions such as, "Are you sure you're pregnant? When was your last period? Have you had any miscarriages?" You would then go to the bathroom, empty your bladder, and take off your underwear. You were then placed on a...

Marriages Only Consisted of Men and Women Together

This film starts off with talking about how people in the 1950's spent their leisure time with television and hanging out with their families. During this era, it talks about how in America their ideal imagine of what a family looked like was a father, mother, and several children.  There was never a mention about a lesbian or gay couples with children, which I find to be sad.  As well as African American couples with children to be as a family but only seemed to show those of white skin and consisted of a man and women couples.  What I do like though is that they advertise about couples staying together within their marriage and making it work.  They do not show couples who have split nor have any step parents. The ideal image is having two parents working hard in their marriages and raising their children together.  Do not get me wrong I do advocate for couples to get divorced when their marriage is unhealthy and they cannot fix it anymore or they think it is ...

People in the 1950's Were not Clean

This video starts off with a medical doctor reacting to 1950's health films. As usual they use a narrator over the film. I would it was the trend back in the 50's to use narration for everything and I do like it in my opinion.  It starts off with the film of a young boy running with his dog and the reactor seems amused by this concept.  He pokes fun at the dogs name which was Mr.dorag. I have to agree that naming your dog this name is odd but it is cute as well.  Moves onto how back in the day there was an awareness for kids not to get overtired from playing too much outside.  In today's world children are more at home with their iPads or watching television all day and not ever outside anymore. This doesn't speak for all children but the majority.  The next film that should be discussed is how people used singing in commercials to spread awareness or to go along with a product someone is selling. Which is not uncommon as we still use this tactic today but not a...

Making a Sandwich the 1950's Way

The video starts off with an old style television, our screen point of view is in black and white, and with light music.  The music reminds me of Wii loading screen jingle. Afterwards they color our screen and show us a sentence, "Let's Make a Sandwich." Goes on to say that sandwiches are necessary and that it is Americanized. It shows two children drinking a soda and eating a wrapped sandwich.   They show a mother and daughter on our screen and they demonstrate how to make a good and proper sandwich.  The view is of all of their ingredients on the table in front of them and they are both dressed in their accurate attire. The mother brings out the bread and the narrator has to say everything they are doing but does not include their thoughts on making the sandwich. The writers of this commercial, I guess you could say is demonstrating that women are the only ones who do the cooking and they have to in order to feed their family.  There is no footage of men or bo...

Top 5 Cars in the 1950's!

1) 1951 Studebaker Champion This car was produced by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend Indiana from 1939 through 1958. It was popular since it is a full size car and could be great for those who had a family.  This car looks like it is from the future and would be great for road trips as well. It comes with a variety of colors and suit it very well too.  2) 1953 Buick Roadmaster Skylark This car was produced by a company named Buick and first came out in 1953. Many people loved this car because not only was it fancy as you drove by but was great for taking the whole family to places.  While not all were built as the designated family car there were ones that were known as a muscle car. This vehicle came in many different colors and were the focus on movies as well.  3) 1953 Porsche 550 Spyder This sports car was produced by Porsche from 1953 through 1956. The Hard Life of Teenagers

It is said that since of the booming economy, parents could now help their children achieve more than they themselves had.  Parents encouraged their teenagers to finish highschool and paid the way for them to attend college.  Many teens during this time period had lots of freedom and were the sneakiest out of all of the generations. Many of them obtained cars from either their hard earned money or from their parents.  They used these cars to be sneaky and to drive where there was no witnesses and have a make out session and sometimes escalated to intimacy.  Many of these students during the 1950's had house parties and the purpose was to make out, use drugs, and drink to have fun.  Some slang words that they used were cruisin' for a bruisin', knuckle sandwhich, daddy-O, burn rubber, party pooper, and cool cat.  The 50's for teenagers were so much fun compared to others and lucky as well as it was almost a perfect snapshot of a certain segment of American So...

5 Restaurants that Opened in the Fifties and are Still Around Today

1) Wendy's  Wendy's opened in 1969 and stayed open from then on still in 2021. Many of their customers choose from burgers, french fries, chili, drinks, and their special frosty.  In the 1960's, they did not have the same logo until it was created in 1969 and worded it with, "Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers." It stuck this way until 2007 when they stuck with only the company name Wendy's. 2) McDonald's   This fast food place was created in 1948 and they offered a simple selection for their customers including hamburgers and fries along with a drink. This tactic was gonna get them started and then progress into more meals and deserts.  Today compared to the 1950's people order fries, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, ice cream cones, chicken nuggets, etc. Back in the day, many people did not go through drive throughs but only to physically walk into these fast food restaurants and order a quick meal. 3) Chick-fil-A This restaurant came into fusion in 1946...
