During the 1950’s children lived different lives than we do
now. They left school early and most of them did not pursue college.
Many children during this time period started to work at 14 years
old and became a drop out. There was a small percentage of who went to college but
compared to today many people need to have a bachelor’s degree to have a good
job.
Unless you have great connections to people who would hire
you without much experience. In this era, getting a job was easier.
You did not have to make a detailed and a long written out resume,
but you did have to put your experiences down. Children at 14 years of age had
no problem attaining a job.
Since in the 1950’s still had the aftereffects of the Second
World War many of their food rations were limited. Sugar was rationed until
1953 and meat came off a year later.
I am sure parents were concerned about how sugar was rationed
during this time but more for the meat. Since they wanted their children to
have good nutrients in their bodies to help them grow healthy.
These kids had to grow up faster than compared to today.
They had to be tossed in with adult responsibilities at the age of 14.
They had to walk and come home from school themselves, they
had to work and drop out of school, they got married and started their own
family at an early age.
Mental health wasn’t always the best either. Many children who
had an illness or mental illness were immediately sent to an asylum.
They even had babies going to these asylums and lived there
with bad treatment from nurses and doctors that worked there. It is sad to think
about, but many people tossed these people aside and let others handle them.
Parents were harsher when disciplining their children, which
is on one side can be good, but this can be bad for kids too. I know one thing
for sure kids were grateful for what they got, and nothing was just given to
them.
They had to earn everything and had to take care of
everything of yours as well. I know one thing for sure though is that children
back in the 1950’s were happier than kids are today.
Based upon research obedient children in the 50’s are much happier than disobedient kids.
