Children in the 1950’s Were Happier than Kids Today

During the 1950’s children lived different lives than we do now. They left school early and most of them did not pursue college.

Many children during this time period started to work at 14 years old and became a drop out. There was a small percentage of who went to college but compared to today many people need to have a bachelor’s degree to have a good job.

Unless you have great connections to people who would hire you without much experience. In this era, getting a job was easier.

You did not have to make a detailed and a long written out resume, but you did have to put your experiences down. Children at 14 years of age had no problem attaining a job.

Since in the 1950’s still had the aftereffects of the Second World War many of their food rations were limited. Sugar was rationed until 1953 and meat came off a year later.

I am sure parents were concerned about how sugar was rationed during this time but more for the meat. Since they wanted their children to have good nutrients in their bodies to help them grow healthy.

These kids had to grow up faster than compared to today. They had to be tossed in with adult responsibilities at the age of 14.

They had to walk and come home from school themselves, they had to work and drop out of school, they got married and started their own family at an early age.

Mental health wasn’t always the best either. Many children who had an illness or mental illness were immediately sent to an asylum.

They even had babies going to these asylums and lived there with bad treatment from nurses and doctors that worked there. It is sad to think about, but many people tossed these people aside and let others handle them.

Parents were harsher when disciplining their children, which is on one side can be good, but this can be bad for kids too. I know one thing for sure kids were grateful for what they got, and nothing was just given to them.

They had to earn everything and had to take care of everything of yours as well. I know one thing for sure though is that children back in the 1950’s were happier than kids are today.

Based upon research obedient children in the 50’s are much happier than disobedient kids.

The Story of Hilliard Brooks Jr's Murder

In 1950 on August 13, a 22-year old man named Hilliard Brooks Jr. was murdered on a bus after he was accused of making a disturbance.  Back in these days what was the disturbance, was he talking back because he had to stick up for himself or was it because he was protecting someone else?  Some reports were very unjust and plain unfair in my opinion.  The reason he was accused of this was because be refused to leave and enter from the rear bus as Jim Crow wanted him to.  This bus driver called the police and a white officer shot this black man and wounded two people in the process.  All because Jim Crow and the bus driver were trying to be big bosses and choose violence when they woke up that day.  Brooks left behind a pregnant wife and several young children. Even though many eye witnesses reported that the shooting was unnecessary, the officer faced no charges.  After this many people were outraged over how this all went down and set the stage for the...

Why Did Narrators From The 1950s Always Sound The Same?

Commercial radio broadcasting started within the 1920's and moved through the 1950's era.  Soon enough people listened less to the radio and went for televisions as they became cheaper.  This is because TV's back in the early 50's were very expensive that only the rich got to watch any shows or interviews. As you know lots of people tuned into the radio to hear about politics, Broadway shows, news broadcasts, and more to hear about what is going on in the world.  What is shocking to find out is that people who were in radio broadcasts and in motion picture films sounded so similar was because they were taught to speak a certain way.  Many people who taught what is called the transatlantic accent in radio and motion picture studios at the time.  When the radio was introduced to the world, microphones sounded tinnier and had a very different frequency.  Many companies wanted their speakers to adopt and accent so that they were heard clearly by the public and ...

Bad Boys in the 1950s

These type of men/teens were the most idolized people in the 1950's along with some celebrities.  One celebrity in particular that had the bad boy style and his name was James Dean.  This type of outfit melted the girls/women's hearts at the time. Males would wear a leather or denim jackets, white or patter button up top underneath, blue or light jeans, either a quiff hair or leave it natural with some gel in it.  I think of the outfits that Johnny Depp would wear in his Crybaby movie with his slicked back hair, leather jacket, and a rebellious but hot vibe.  Today we label these type of people as bad boys but back in the 1950's they were called the greasers and apart of the greaser subculture.  Looking back at these photos you never saw older men wearing this style, it was mostly teenagers and young adults.  Those who dressed this way were definitely very popular in high school. Let's also not forget they added a cigarettes to compliment the look. If any o...
