Many women during the 50's had to get their abortions on the downlow. This means that they could not do their abortions in clinics like people do today.
Lot of the women tell news articles today about how and where these abortions took place and many of them said in high-rise buildings.
They would rush into the apartment building and be so nervous because they had no idea what could happen.
The procedure could go wrong or they would get caught because somebody snitched.
Many of the women said as soon as they walked in the assistant would ask for the money and at the time it price was $250 for one abortion procedure.
Male doctors would do their surgery and it was mostly those who did not have American licensing just yet.
He would come in and ask you questions such as, "Are you sure you're pregnant? When was your last period? Have you had any miscarriages?"
You would then go to the bathroom, empty your bladder, and take off your underwear. You were then placed on a table and the doctor would examine you.
A thin metal rod would be inserted in you and you would be packed with gauze. You would then feel a needle in your buttock and would be told to sit upright.
After the procedure was completed you were expected to walk as much as possible. It was said that the cervix would dilate and your uterus would contract in response to this surgery.
Within 24 hours, the probe would be removed. It was normal to have cramping but if you had severe pain, bleeding, or passed out.
You would not go to the doctor but to call the transporter, who would call the assistant, and go back to the man's place but not without prior knowledge first.
