Top 5 Stories Set in the 50s You Cannot Put Down

Some books about the 1950's are not that well written in my opinion as they leave some good details out from this era or do not have good enough information.

Others though are so detailed and are so interesting that you cannot put down not matter if it is already 1:00am.

1) Wishing you were here by Catherine Chant.

This novel is about how a woman who makes a wish that ends her in the 1950's. Where she tries to save a teenager from dying but gets caught up in knowing him. Which she eventually falls in love with him.

2) A 1950s Housewife by Sheila Hardy.

This book is all about the strict rules and expectations housewives had to do and abide by. How married life was like during the post-war period. What did women and men do to spice up their marriages as well.

3) Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.

Many people usually read this book in school but not for all. This book is about how a young man goes through adulthood while staying in NYC. We as readers see what happy times and struggles he goes through.

4) The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

Although it starts off within the year of 1947 it does go into the 1950's and after this decade as well. It shows life of a young college girl who is pregnant during the time of World War II. She is unmarried and almost about to get kicked out of her family home because of it.

5) Bunny Lake is Missing by Evelyn Piper.

This novel is about a young woman named Bunny who goes missing but how the police refuse to search for her. Even with the offered help by Blanche as but as she bothers an officer she falls in love. This book has great suspense.

What Was Good About 1950's Cars?

I have to say that 1950’s cars look like they are from a whole different universe. What I love about these cars are the white streak around the front of each of the tires. You have many car brands such as the Packard, Mercury, Chevrolet Corvette, Hudson, Ford Thunderbird, Chevrolet Bel Air, Chrysler Imperial, Chrysler New Yorker, Buick Skylar, and more!  I personally have to say the Chevrolet Bel Air is my favorite looks wise. Many people who had cars in this era were more towards those with some wealth. I noticed that a lot of the percentage of people walked, biked, or took the bus to wherever they were going. Not everyone in the 1950’s had a car but those who did had some money. Lots of these cars were geared towards couples who had children as well. The cars back in this time period came in many colors, which I love! Today many people have bland colors on their cars. Which are their preference but cars with unique or cool colors really stand out. When looking through pictures of...

Women were Disowned for Having Children Out of Wedlock

Many women during the 1950’s gave up their children for adoption and it was mostly because of babies being born out of wedlock. Within this time ladies who got pregnant out of wedlock were shamed and disowned by their friends and families. They were considered a disgrace to the family to have a child before marriage. During this era, it was widely judged. Which I can understand why they would be disowned because they could not wait until marriage but on the other hand it happens sometimes. Many women gave up their babies up for adoption had the right to refuse to disclose the identity of the father. Lots of the ladies did choose to tell people who the father was but it was more common that the women refused to tell. Social workers at the time respected these women’s decisions about this situation. I personally have mixed emotions about this topic. I do not think that people should be ashamed for having children out of wedlock but still should be widely influenced to...

1950s Hairstyles That Were Popular and Easy

Thoughts on 50's Hairstyles Hairstyles back in this era were mostly shown of women with short curly hair.  They had big curls that made the volume in their hair rise and looked so shiny as well.  The women put curlers in their hair the night before while it was wet so once they took them out they would have lushish waves on the top of their heads. What is not talked about is that they did have long hair in this era.  Those who did produced the commercials and photoshoots just did not include these types of women/hairstyles as much. All of these women had lots of volume and head full of hair as well, I am quite jealous.  Those who had longer hair in the 1950's styled their hair with bigger curlers the night before as well.  I would have to say I love the look of both hairstyles and I found them so intriguing!  Women's Hairstyles in the 1950s Many of the women in this time period went for the short hair with curls as a way to look fancy and presentable....
