Psychiatrist in 1950

Psychiatrists in the 1950's

I do like psychiatrist attitude towards their patients especially the guy from the YouTube channel named, "Pika Grape Snack."

They have great content they post regarding many patients with mental disabilities.
This article is about a psychiatrist performing treatments on his patients. How people disliked them and why wouldn't they go to one themselves?

The man in these films that I have found, I like that he talks about them like they are human beings and not people who are disgraceful or have something terribly wrong with them.

Some people from this time period may think of people with mental disabilities like this since it is not widely known like they are today.

The psychiatrist speaks calmly to them and tries to understand them rather make fun of them or immediately dismiss them.

He is actually interested in getting them help and finding out why they have these specific mental disabilities.

Why Psychiatrists Were Disliked in This Time Period

One thing I did not like though is their medical solutions to these mental issues such as using shock treatment or locking patients up in bathtubs for a while.

Some other treatments worth mentioning are drinking harmful substances, physical abuse, burning them, etc.

Although one psychiatrist I mentioned does treat his patients very well others are not always wanting to help their patients like this.

Some facilities do not treat their patients well at all and even neglect them to the point where their patients die.

This is especially devastating for their families as they sent them to these companies to get their family members help rather them suffer.

Why People Hated Getting Help From Psychiatrists

Lots of people hated getting help from professionals because going to these mental facilities were a sign that you are unwell and would not want to be judged once you got out.

Many people thought receiving help from any professional for any mental issues were that you are crazy and wanted to harm others for pleasure.

As you can see the public in the 50's were taught that going to facilities meant you were unstable and frightening.

People who could not blend in to the norm of the public like others and that you had something terribly wrong with you that you are considered a disgrace.

The Story of Hilliard Brooks Jr's Murder

In 1950 on August 13, a 22-year old man named Hilliard Brooks Jr. was murdered on a bus after he was accused of making a disturbance.  Back in these days what was the disturbance, was he talking back because he had to stick up for himself or was it because he was protecting someone else?  Some reports were very unjust and plain unfair in my opinion.  The reason he was accused of this was because be refused to leave and enter from the rear bus as Jim Crow wanted him to.  This bus driver called the police and a white officer shot this black man and wounded two people in the process.  All because Jim Crow and the bus driver were trying to be big bosses and choose violence when they woke up that day.  Brooks left behind a pregnant wife and several young children. Even though many eye witnesses reported that the shooting was unnecessary, the officer faced no charges.  After this many people were outraged over how this all went down and set the stage for the...

Why Did Narrators From The 1950s Always Sound The Same?

Commercial radio broadcasting started within the 1920's and moved through the 1950's era.  Soon enough people listened less to the radio and went for televisions as they became cheaper.  This is because TV's back in the early 50's were very expensive that only the rich got to watch any shows or interviews. As you know lots of people tuned into the radio to hear about politics, Broadway shows, news broadcasts, and more to hear about what is going on in the world.  What is shocking to find out is that people who were in radio broadcasts and in motion picture films sounded so similar was because they were taught to speak a certain way.  Many people who taught what is called the transatlantic accent in radio and motion picture studios at the time.  When the radio was introduced to the world, microphones sounded tinnier and had a very different frequency.  Many companies wanted their speakers to adopt and accent so that they were heard clearly by the public and ...

1950s Common Alcohol Glasses

Many people drank lots of alcohol during the 50’s era. Mostly men though as woman would have been criticized if they drank too much. As they had to be sober and fully aware to take care of the children. One glass that is popular is the 1949 vintage whiskey glass. It is a small, but it can contain lots of alcohol. Many people like this whiskey glass because it can obtain lots of ice. Another widely talked about glass is the 1950 vintage wine cup.  This glass is popular because this caters to women who love wine. It can hold a good amount of white wine and red wine. Many people use this glass during parties and other gatherings. The scotch glasses are the most popular out of everyone of these cups mentioned. This is because lot of men used scotch glasses in the 1950’s. Especially for those who went to the local bars. Lastly, the beer pint glass is the next favorite for people who like to collect 1950’s cups or alcohol in general. This beer glass is clear and looks styli...
