Gender Roles in the 1950s And Why They Are Wrong

 Women's Roles
Gender Roles in the 1950s And Why They Are Wrong

During this time women's roles were quite strict and they had to do all the cleaning, cooking, raising the children.

On top of these they were pushed to be healthy and workout to stay fit for their husbands.

The men on the other hand were supposed to support the family based only on their one income and back in this era wages were for keeping people off the streets.

The 1950's were all about the family life and living to be peaceful after the war ended.

Women were taught to socialize as well but by hanging out with their girl friends and talk to people when going to the grocery store.

Many of the women did not have any social anxiety or felt isolated because they made time to hang out with others and made sure to be out and about even if it were to get coffee.

Lots of them did not rely on TV's to keep their time occupied and kept themselves busy by doing chores, socializing, doing fun activities, taking vacations with their families, etc.

Women's Roles in 2021

Women's roles today are to keep a job or choose to be housewives but most of these housewives have jobs from home.

Since the internet has sparked the interest of new opportunities that those in the 1950's did not have. Many people have jobs at home where they can spend more time with their families.

We have versatile gender roles such as men can stay home and be housewives and the women can go out and work. Others like to have the women stay home and the men work.

Sometimes it is that both genders work for their income and rely on babysitters or family members to babysit their children. Which is not a bad thing but these gender roles have evolved.

Since the internet has been around and television people are not as strict with themselves such as 50s housewives or men who were working.

Televisions are not helping us either we are too focused on social media and putting so much pressure on ourselves on being the same as other people.

This also causes many people to have social anxiety without socialization and the internet does hold people back this way.

Many people feel isolated and adding a pandemic it is not helping us at all.

The Story of Hilliard Brooks Jr's Murder

In 1950 on August 13, a 22-year old man named Hilliard Brooks Jr. was murdered on a bus after he was accused of making a disturbance.  Back in these days what was the disturbance, was he talking back because he had to stick up for himself or was it because he was protecting someone else?  Some reports were very unjust and plain unfair in my opinion.  The reason he was accused of this was because be refused to leave and enter from the rear bus as Jim Crow wanted him to.  This bus driver called the police and a white officer shot this black man and wounded two people in the process.  All because Jim Crow and the bus driver were trying to be big bosses and choose violence when they woke up that day.  Brooks left behind a pregnant wife and several young children. Even though many eye witnesses reported that the shooting was unnecessary, the officer faced no charges.  After this many people were outraged over how this all went down and set the stage for the...

Why Did Narrators From The 1950s Always Sound The Same?

Commercial radio broadcasting started within the 1920's and moved through the 1950's era.  Soon enough people listened less to the radio and went for televisions as they became cheaper.  This is because TV's back in the early 50's were very expensive that only the rich got to watch any shows or interviews. As you know lots of people tuned into the radio to hear about politics, Broadway shows, news broadcasts, and more to hear about what is going on in the world.  What is shocking to find out is that people who were in radio broadcasts and in motion picture films sounded so similar was because they were taught to speak a certain way.  Many people who taught what is called the transatlantic accent in radio and motion picture studios at the time.  When the radio was introduced to the world, microphones sounded tinnier and had a very different frequency.  Many companies wanted their speakers to adopt and accent so that they were heard clearly by the public and ...

Bad Boys in the 1950s

These type of men/teens were the most idolized people in the 1950's along with some celebrities.  One celebrity in particular that had the bad boy style and his name was James Dean.  This type of outfit melted the girls/women's hearts at the time. Males would wear a leather or denim jackets, white or patter button up top underneath, blue or light jeans, either a quiff hair or leave it natural with some gel in it.  I think of the outfits that Johnny Depp would wear in his Crybaby movie with his slicked back hair, leather jacket, and a rebellious but hot vibe.  Today we label these type of people as bad boys but back in the 1950's they were called the greasers and apart of the greaser subculture.  Looking back at these photos you never saw older men wearing this style, it was mostly teenagers and young adults.  Those who dressed this way were definitely very popular in high school. Let's also not forget they added a cigarettes to compliment the look. If any o...
